Encapsulating all the dark glamour, divine decadence and hedonistic joy
of the roaring Twenties, Gareth Pugh's A/W 2010 collection is a
stylised, silver and black Art Deco fantasy projected at
breakneck speed into the twenty-first century.

JOIE DE VIVRE

PERFORMANCE / RAQUEL ZIMMERMANN

DIRECTION / RUTH HOGBEN

Those bad enough to walk on the wild side should have already
put in the request.. but will she accept?
We couldn't bare to see another
reappropriation a la sweet dreams.
And Raquel Zimmermann?
Wow. She's the one to beat right now.

THE FILM FORUM DEBUTS
HI DEF / RESTORED METROPOLIS

“A masterpiece of visionary silent cinema ...
one of the strangest, most fascinating films ever made,
a futuristic nightmare that is both sublime in its grandeur and
remarkably intimate in its emotions. Just about every science-fiction
movie you can think of pays tribute to its influence, but to date
none has matched its strangeness or its prophetic power.”

Metropolis was cut substantially after its German premiere in 1927, and a great deal of footage was lost over the past decades.  So when Argentinian film curator Paula Felix-Didier discovered the missing footage of METROPOLIS, film fanatics rejoiced. Roger Ebert called it " One of the most important film archival discoveries in history! As surprising as if the missing ending of The Magnificent Amberson's were found." And now Film Forum is hosting a two week screening extravaganza from May 7-20.  It's a must see for any sci-fi fanatic– and as you may know, a consistent reference for the fashion industry. Head to FILM FORUM for screening info.

PREMIERE / FRIDAY APRIL 30 / 7PM
TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL

ULTRASUEDE: IN SEARCH OF HALSTON is the most buzzed about fashion doc since Valentino: The Last Emperor. And with a primary cast that reads: Angelica Huston, Liza Minelli, Andre Leon Tally, Diane Von Fustenberg, Billy Joel, and (unsung American fashion hero) Ralph Rucci– how could it not be. The program notes "A glowing, prismatic portrait of the rise and fall of America's first celebrity designer—Halston—the man who was synonymous with fashion in the 1970s, and became the emperor of NYC nightlife. Interviews with friends and witnesses (including Liza Minnelli, Diane Von Furstenberg, André Leon Talley, Anjelica Huston, Bob Colacello, and Billy Joel, among others) round out this glittering evocation of the man who defined the most beautiful and decadent era of recent memory. "

After the screening Director Whitney Sudler-Smith, André Leon Talley, Ralph Rucci, Pat Cleveland (!!) and other haute guests featured in the film will be on hand for a conversation about the legend of Halston, celebrity fashion design, and the city that fostered them both—New York The trailer after the jump.

NOW SCREENING
RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER'S

WORLD ON A WIRE
AT MOMA / APRIL 14-19 2010

“A very beautiful story that depicts a world where one is able to make
projections of people using a computer. And, of course, this leads to the
uncertainty of whether someone himself is a projection, since in the virtual world
projections resemble reality. Perhaps another, larger world has made us as
a virtual one? In this sense it deals with the old philosophical model,
which here takes on a certain horror.”

THE WEINSTEINS (+ BURKLE) BID 600 MIL
TO BUY BACK LEGENDARY STUDIO

Film aficionados (and people who enjoy a good film) wait with bated breath for the glory days to be restored. Because when your renting movies with dates strictly avant 2000– you know the art of (somewhat) mainstream filmmaking has lost its soul. (Note: there are a few recent exceptions Precious among others) We’re glad someone is stepping up to the Miramax plate. Pop culture could use a dose of realness– films with soul and flavor.

By CAROLINE HAGOOD

NEO-GIALLO / A FEMININE PERSPECTIVE

A triptych of female desire with GIALLO written all over it, Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s French language film, Amer (2009), pans in on three different interludes in Ana’s sexual evolution-- childhood (Cassandra Forêt), adolescence (Charlotte Eugène Guibeaud), and womanhood (Marie Bos).  In the first act of this kaleidoscopic, erotic vision, we see her trying to negotiate a childhood chock-full of sex and violence (complete with a particularly sweaty rendering of the primal scene) that she can’t yet comprehend. In the following two acts, we witness her slowly grasping, and eventually paying the price for, her own carnality (culminating in a striking scene of bathtub onanism with a comb).

In this super-sensory space, the sound design and camerawork are expert and there are eyes everywhere—peeping through keyholes, blinking, rolling, and even brushing with fates that would make DALI and BUÑUEL cringe. This generous helping of visual organs reminds us of the eye of the camera, but also of our own widened peepers devouring its product, rendering us complicit in all this voyeurism.
